Ceiling Fan Installation
Ceiling fan installation is one of the most popular home improvement projects for South Florida homeowners. And it’s easy to see why! Ceiling fans are energy efficient and can improve the comfortability and ambiance of any room.
If you are wondering how to order and install the right ceiling fan for your home, Chanay Electric can help! Here is our guide to everything you should know about how to elevate your space with a ceiling fan.
Start your search by size
Finding the appropriate size fan for your space is essential for energy efficiency and your interior design goals. And most experts will recommend a fan size based on the square footage of your room, with smaller rooms requiring a shorter blade span and larger rooms requiring a longer blade span or multiple ceiling fans.
The exact size fan you’ll need will depend on the dimensions of your room, but in general, small rooms under 100 square feet typically can accommodate a fan of up to 36 inches in blade length. 36 inch to 54 inch blades are appropriate for medium size rooms of up to 400 square feet. And anything larger will need over 54 inch blades or multiple fans.
Another way to determine the appropriate size of a ceiling fan for your space is to look at the CFM, or the cubic feet per minute. Small rooms are typically okay with lower CFMs (around 1000 CFM) while a larger room will need a higher CFM (4000 CFMs or more)

Choose a blade and mounting design
When it comes to mounting and blade design, there are some aesthetic and practical factors to keep in mind.
Let’s start with mounting. You can either have your fan mounted flush to the ceiling or on a downrod. Downrods are generally reserved for high ceilings so that your fan sits about 8 feet from the floor.
Now, when it comes to the blade design, your choice can be mostly aesthetic. There isn’t typically a huge difference in energy efficiency when it comes to blade design, so you can choose a look that aligns with your interior design goals.
Pay attention to user reviews for noisiness
Most modern ceiling fans are designed to make the least amount of noise possible. But it’s still a good idea to go online and read reviews for a particular model before buying one, paying close attention to noise levels of the fan.
Decide whether to include a light fixture
Choosing a ceiling fan with a built-in light is a great way to add more lighting in your space without taking up more room for a separate light fixture. But, it’s not everyone’s favorite design choice, and you might prefer the look of a ceiling fan without a light. Take a look at various designs with different styles of light fixtures and without light fixtures to decide which one appeals to you most.

Don’t forget about the convenience of a dimmer and mode setting switch!
Gone are the days of having to reach up and pull on dangling chains in order to turn on or off the light or change the settings on your ceiling fans.
Modern ceiling fans can be controlled by a wall-mounted switch, remote control, or your phone for a better user experience.
For outdoor ceiling fan installation, choose fans rated for outdoor use
If you’re going to be installing a fan on your outdoor patio or pool area, you’ll want to make sure to opt for a model that is rated for outdoor use or use in humid areas. Outdoor ceiling fans are made with more durable materials with special features to make them weatherproof against rain and humidity.
Keep in mind that even when you buy an outdoor ceiling fan, proper installation is important to ensure that the power source is also adequately weather proof. As certified electricians, feel free to rely on us to make sure that any ceiling fan you order for your outdoor space is safely installed!
Don’t go the DIY route
Even if you are very comfortable installing light fixtures and doing some electrical work around the house, it’s always recommended that you call in a professional for ceiling fan installation. These are heavy devices that require proper mounting and electrical wiring installation to ensure that they are safe to use.
